The four-team playoff system is going out with a bang.
Oh, the drama.
We just experienced what may have been the most controversial weekend in College Football Playoff history. Thanks to Alabama's SEC Championship win, an undefeated Power Five team was left out of the playoff for the first time. Despite an injury to their starting quarterback, Florida State fans are understandably in immense outrage.
But for those with no skin in the game, it was a fun weekend of watching matches and rematches and running playoff scenarios through our heads.
ALABAMA PUNCHES ITS PLAYOFF TICKET
After media members tried to write Alabama off as the king of the SEC, the Crimson Tide pulled off a monumental victory over Georgia, which had won 29 consecutive games. Still, the win wasn’t enough to punch Nick Saban’s CFP ticket on the spot. The Tide needed some help from the committee — which could leave the SEC out of the playoff entirely — and they got it. However, some folks raised questions about its resume.
#Alabama has now beaten every team in the SEC in their most recent meeting.

Nick Saban’s decision to bench Jalen Hurts for Tua Tagovailoa in the 2018 CFP National Championship Game was legendary, but his decision to bench Jalen Milroe for Tyler Buchner for USF made Milroe better and has Alabama in the CFP.

Saban continues to enhance his coaching job.

ESPN just counted LSU as a key win for Alabama but removed it for Florida State. Unhinged behavior.

Florida State isn’t that great:

• pulled away late from 6-6 G5 team
• needed prayer to beat 6-6 rival
• 3-point win vs. 4-8 conference foe
• lost by 10 at home
oh wait shoot this is my Alabama file one second
TEXAS IS BACK...FOR REAL
For the first time ever, Texas is heading to the College Football Playoff. In their third year under Steve Sarkisian, the Longhorns put together a nearly perfect season and capped it off by taking down rival Oklahoma State in the Big 12 title game. While the loss to Oklahoma loomed large, it was not enough to keep Texas out of the top 4. Hook ‘em!

A quick way to identify people telling on themselves. It’s OK to be upset that FSU didn’t get into CFP. But pay attention to people, especially media, who focus their ire on Alabama/SEC but are silent on Texas. They’re OK with one 1-loss P5 champion passing FSU, just not Ala.

Texas is better than Alabama.

Texas already beat Alabama.
It doesn’t matter who Alabama beat, because TEXAS BEAT ALABAMA.
We don’t have to wonder nor guess. Just because your SEC friends don’t like the truth, doesn’t make it less true. pic.twitter.com/2BG9rKI8fw

ACC CHAMPIONSHIP NOT ENOUGH FOR NOLES
The ACC Championship was a very ugly game. Down its starting quarterback, Florida State did its best to fight and crawl its way to a victory over a tough Louisville team. Still, the playoff committee decided to punish the Noles’ resiliency rather than reward it. Their perfect season will meet one more maker in the Orange Bowl against Georiga.
Booger McFarland is not happy that Alabama got into the CFP over an undefeated Florida State team.

Did FSU's defense actually hurt their case by making Louisville look terrible and the win therefore less impressive?

12-1 Bama's win over 6-win USF was Nebraska-grade hideous. But it happened in some sort of ancient-time vortex, so it doesn't count. Games depreciate in validity over time. Avoid playing any until December
(FSU looked better against Louisville last night than Alabama did against Auburn, Arkansas or USF, btw.)
— Bill Connelly (@ESPN_BillC) December 3, 2023
Instead of celebrating Florida State’s resilience, an elite defense and the fact that they beat everyone on their schedule (including two SEC teams, one with the likely Heisman Trophy winner) … the selection committee penalized them. I can’t get over it.

Florida State should 100% claim a Championship if they win their bowl to finish 14-0, all they have to do is beat (checks notes) 2X defending National Champions Georgia.

WASHINGTON STILL IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT
Well, folks, the Pac-12 did it. The conference did not cannibalize itself and will send a representative to the CFP in Washington. Although this title game came down to the wire, it felt like the Huskies were in control all night. After the win, questions were raised about why they didn’t deserve the No. 1 spot.
Oregon-Washington was the most-watched Pac-12 championship in conference history.

The game averaged 9.2 million viewers on ABC, and it peaked at 11.1 million viewers. pic.twitter.com/x14Qz0jGX6
The Pac-12 was the best conference this year, their best year ever, and last year ever. It's been a remarkable run to watch for a conference that's down and out.

The Committee rewards this dominance with no Rose Bowl for Washington, and recent FCS promotion Liberty for Oregon.

MICHIGAN ROUTS IOWA
This was certainly the least dramatic game of the weekend. Michigan did what everyone was expecting it to do to Iowa: grind out points on offense, and keep the Hawkeyes off the board. We now bid farewell to this iconic 2023 Iowa team, who will get a shot at Tennessee in the Citrus Bowl. Michigan, on the other hand, isn’t too excited about its playoff date with Alabama.
Michigan’s reaction to playing Alabama is less than encouraging
