Jake Diebler hires former Big Ten assistant to join Ohio State staff

Jake Diebler is wasting no time turning the Ohio State men’s basketball program into his own. Diebler recently added Dave Dickerson and Joel Justus to his staff and just received a commitment from 2026 five-star guard and Cleveland native, Marcus Johnson.

Diebler has now added a second assistant coach to his staff. It was announced yesterday that Jamall Walker will be joining the Buckeye bench alongside Diebler.

Walker most recently was part of Bryce Drew’s staff at Grand Canyon University where he has spent the past four seasons. Before that, Walker had stints at Arizona, Ohio University, and Illinois among others.

Walker followed John Groce to Champaign from Athens where he spent eight seasons with the Illini between Groce and current head coach Brad Underwood. Walker even served as the interim after Groce’s firing and led Illinois to wins over Valparaiso and Boise State in the 2017 National Invitational Tournament.

Diebler had this to say about the addition of Coach Walker.

“I could not be more happy to welcome Jamall and his family to the Ohio State basketball family,” Diebler said. “Jamall’s recruiting success, his experience in the Big Ten as well as working with a coach like Bryce Drew were all really important intangibles that I was looking for when filling out a staff. He’s got a great defensive mind and a tremendous ability to connect with players. He’s going to be a great asset for our program.”

Ohio State still has two assistant coaching positions available as Diebler looks to round out his staff for the upcoming season.
