Hugo Lloris announces retirement from International football

Xtra Time Web Desk: France national team goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on Monday announced his retirement from international football. 36-year-old Lloris was part of the France side that were the runners-up in the recently concluded FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. He will continue to play club football for Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs.

Lloris made a record 145 senior appearances for France during his 14-year international career. He was appointed captain in February 2012 and went on to lift the World Cup in Russia in 2018 after France’s 4-2 victory against Croatia in the final in Moscow.

Loris also led the Les Bleus to Nations League glory in October 2021 and was part of the national side that lost the Euro 2016 final 0-1 to Portugal in Paris.

“There comes a time when you have to know how to pass the hand,” Lloris told L’Equipe.

He added, “I don’t want to make it my own, I’ve always said and repeated that the France team doesn’t belong to anyone, and we all have to make sure that’s the case, me first. I think that behind, the team is ready to continue, there is also a goalkeeper who is ready [Maignan].”
