Betting Ohio State players in the NFL: J.K. Dobbins season prop bets

The 2023 NFL season is about to kick off in less than three weeks, and if you are like me, you are looking at the offerings from all of the betting books. One of the largest online betting menus comes from DraftKings where the popular sportsbook has specific prop bets for some of our favorite players.

I always prefer to place my money on familiar faces and I love looking in the direction of former Ohio State Buckeyes. One player that keeps getting mentioned in the media is J.K. Dobbins. He has has had an interesting career as of late with some injuries slowing him down as well as a contract dispute, but he appears to be the lone option as a lead back for the Baltimore Ravens.

DraftKings currently has two props attached to Dobbins with his total rushing yards set at 750.5 yards, and his total for rushing touchdowns set at 6.5 touchdowns.

So what will it be? The over or the under?

As a Dobbins fan, I immediately gravitate to the over on the touchdowns, considering that new Baltimore offensive coordinator, Tod Monken, has made it known his plan to decrease designed quarterback runs, which would have one assume that not only more rushing opportunities, but also more goal line opportunities for Dobbins.

Seven touchdowns is more than doable for a lead back in the NFL. In 2020, Dobbins wasn’t even the starter for the Ravens and scored nine touchdowns. He missed all of 2021 and had a shortened 2022, which saw him limited to seven games, scoring two touchdowns. Two touchdowns seems like a low amount, but that was less than half of the overall games. If we expect that trend to continue, Dobbins would have scored four touchdowns in 14 games and we could expect that he would have scored at least one touchdown in the other missed three games. That puts his total expected touchdowns at five.

When evaluating the rushing yards total at 750.5, my initial reaction is to hit the under. I know that is shocking considering I took the over on touchdowns, but you can luck into a touchdown and there will be goal line opportunities. Tis number is nothing to scoff at. During his best season, Dobbins only ran for 805 yards, and last season he ran for 427 yards. With his injury history and contract situation, it might be best to hit the under or stay away.

Predictions:

Rushing Yards – Under 750.5 yards

Rushing Touchdowns – Over 6.5 touchdowns
