D-II Transfer OT Alan Herron Rescinds Penn State Commitment, Flips To Maryland

It was a terrific 10 days, Alan.

Just over a week ago, Penn State accepted the commitment of Division II offensive tackle Alan Herron. But as it turns out, the Transfer Portal doesn’t always have happy endings for the Nittany Lions, as Herron announced earlier this evening that he flipped his commitment from Penn State to Maryland.

As we talked about when Herron committed, he likely wasn’t going to be someone who pushed for a starting gig right away. He’s relatively new to football and with the jump from Division II to Penn State, it was more likely than not that Herron would need a redshirt season. Perhaps that’s part of the reason he flipped to Maryland, as one would imagine that the path to playing time might be a bit quicker with the Terrapins.

Regardless, it’s a tough loss for Penn State and James Franklin, especially when you consider that they aren’t casting the widest of nets in the transfer portal. It’s not like they offered five or six other offensive tackles. Herron — along with Texas A&M’s Chase Bisontis who opted to return to the Aggies — were really it.

Players can continue to enter the portal until January 2, and with teams finishing up bowl games across the country, there should still be another crop of players that will enter in the coming days. Still, it’s a tricky time for Penn State, as the Nittany Lions won’t be able to host anyone again until after the dead period ends on January 3.
