Florida Football Player Profile: Cornerback Kaiir Elam

||

Going into the 2022 football season, Gators Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Florida roster from the previous campaign.

Each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and either what role they will play for Billy Napier this coming season or what their future looks like after Florida.

Florida’s star defensive back Kaiir Elam entered the 2021 campaign as a projected first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft. While his stock stumbled a bit this past season, he still sneaks into the opening round according to many prognosticators.

Depth Chart Overview

Elam’s junior season in Gainesville, which was marred by injury and a porous defensive scheme operated by the Gators in 2021, did not go quite as well as many had hoped. Despite a slip in the numbers, however, he still looks like another former Florida defensive back that will continue to carry the DBU banner into the NFL.

According to his draft profile at NFL.com:

Elam is the next up in a long line of talented Florida cornerbacks, but he failed to play his best football in his final collegiate season. He is patient and strong to mirror and impede releases but inconsistent staying connected to the early stages of the route. He plays with good awareness in zone and has the twitch and length to make plays on the throw when squatting in space. He was beat on deep patterns against Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia, which might have led to excessive grabbing and an overall lack of trust in his technique on the 2021 tape. He plays big at the catch point but smaller in run support. Elam has early CB3 and eventual CB2 value as a press and zone corner.

Kaiir comes from a pedigree of defensive backs, with both his father and uncle Abram and Matt, respectively, playing safety in the NFL. The latter is also a UF alumnus who played under both Urban Meyer and Will Muschamp.
