Highly coveted EDGE recruit Marvin Jones Jr. lists Oklahoma in his top 5

With high school football seasons winding down and the early signing period for high school football on the horizon, many of the remaining uncommitted recruits have begun to focus solely on their collegiate futures. For Oklahoma, they have 17 players committed to their 2022 class right now. There’s the possibility of 5-7 high schoolers that the Sooners have a shot with or will land in the next couple of months. One of the uncommitted players OU still has a chance with is Marvin Jones Jr.

Jones is an edge defender out of Florida and plays at American Heritage with a current Sooner commit in 2023 wide receiver Brandon Inniss. The Sooners have been methodically doing the work necessary to have a chance to close the deal, and with Jones’ latest announcement, it looks as if the stage is set.

The Sooners have made his Top 5 and are joined by Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, and Texas A&M.  Jones is far from a complete prospect as he made the switch to the edge after playing receiver his first few years of high school. Still, he has an extremely high ceiling and has long arms and speed that can’t be taught.

As it currently stands, Oklahoma is in a fight with Alabama and Florida State for the talented 2022 recruit’s services. FSU may very well be the winner when the dust settles as an FSU legacy and how much of a draw that can have to kids. Derrick Moore, one of the current Sooner commits, has been recruiting Jones hard. They even joined up and connected during their official visit to Oklahoma when the Sooners beat West Virginia.

Time will tell how this one plays out. If Oklahoma misses out, it won’t be for lack of trying. Jamar Cain has recruited Jones relentlessly, making multiple trips to the Sunshine State to check on Jones.

When might he announce his decision? Marvin Jones Jr told this to Noles 247:

“I’m hoping for a [the Early Signing Period], but if it went to February I wouldn’t be too surprised,” Jones told Andrew Ivins of 247Sports recently. “I’m definitely hoping to do it in December. I rather do it then.”

The Sooners still have some time to make their final impressions as the 4-star edge and 55th ranked player in the USA TODAY High School Sports Composite Player Rankings closes in on a commitment.
