The Nittany Lions resume conference play this weekend

The No. 20 Penn State men’s hockey team resumes Big Ten play this weekend when they take on No. 8 Michigan State. The Nittany Lions split with the Spartans in the first series this season, winning the first game in a shootout before dropping the second in regulation.

How to Watch

  • When: 7pm (Friday), 4:30pm (Saturday)
  • Where: Pegula Ice Arena
  • TV: Big Ten Plus (Friday), Big Ten Network (Saturday)
  • Radio: Penn State Sports Network

Opponent Preview

Michigan State enters this weekend second in the Big Ten. The Spartans are led by Joey Larson’s 11 goals and 22 points. Red Savage and Isaac Howard are also each averaging over one point per game. The team’s power play has been deadly all season, converting at a 28.1% rate, good for sixth in the NCAA and second in the Big Ten behind Michigan.

The Spartans boast two quality goaltending options. Trey Augustine has had an outstanding freshman campaign, posting a 11-3-2 record, .916 save percentage, 2.97 GAA, and one shutout. Backup Luca Di Pasquo is 2-1-1 with a .910 save percentage and 2.41 GAA.

Michigan State has lost only once in regulation since the start of November.

Prediction

Penn State looked very rusty coming off the holiday break, needing a comeback from 6-2 down to beat Army. This is going to be a challenge for the Lions, but they will need to pick up at least one win to keep pace in the conference standings. Having the students back in the Roar Zone should be a difference-maker.

Penn State 5-3, Michigan State 4-1
