Ohio State softball beats Maryland to clinch weekend series

There’s still one more game to play in a three-game weekend series between Ohio State and Maryland, but the Buckeyes clinched the series with a 6-3 win on Saturday to take the first two.

It didn’t take long for OSU to get on the board. After holding Maryland scoreless in the top of the first inning, Taylor Heckman homered to right field in the bottom of the inning to give Ohio State the 1-0 lead. Things remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning when Heckman struck again with one out when she grounded the ball up the middle for a two-run RBI single to extend the Buckeyes’ lead to 3-0.

Maryland would tighten things up in the top of the sixth inning with two runs of its own to make it 3-2, but OSU struck back again in the bottom of the inning with three more runs to make things 6-2. The Terps would score one run in the top of the seventh and bring the tying run to the on-deck circle, but a line-out to third base would end things at 6-3.

Emily Ruck was dominant in the circle for most of the game, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning before finally allowing Maryland to get to her. She got the win and did so in 6.2 innings of action, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out seven.

Ohio State won its sixth-straight game and improved its overall record to 26-17 overall and 7-9 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes and Terrapins will do battle again on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Buckeye Field.
