Oklahoma battles but falls short in 85-83 overtime loss to No. 6 Texas

||

The Oklahoma Sooners have had one fascinating season. At times, they have looked like a team that was one of the best 68 teams in the country, and other times where they couldn’t be bothered to correctly lace up their Jordan’s to play ball at all.

On Saturday, the Jekyll and Hyde Sooners showed up again as they played very well for a large portion of the game but lost a nail-biter against their biggest rival, the No. 6/5 ranked Texas Longhorns. The loss put a bow on a season sweep for the Longhorns.

Oklahoma played well enough to win the game as they finished the first half with Texas tied at 34 apiece.

Milos Uzan led the way early with 10 points in the first half and helped run the offense smoothly and efficiently. With guard Grant Sherfield and Jalen Hill only having just six points combined in the first half, Uzan’s contributions along with Joe Bamisile, Tanner Groves, and Sam Godwin really gave Oklahoma the boost it needed to stay in the game.

After the break, Grant Sherfield reintroduced himself to the Longhorns in a big way, with 14 of his 18 coming in the second half, which included four three-pointers.

Neither team was able to make a big run in the game as the margin stayed within four to five points throughout. However, a 13-4 run from the Sooners gave them a seven-point lead with about eight minutes to go. The Sooners then went scoreless from the field for over 7 minutes allowing Texas to regain control.

Texas held a 73-68 lead with 1:30 left before fouls on Timmy Allen and Dylan Disu sent OU to the line on separate trips. Jalen Hill and Sam Godwin both went 1/2 from the free-throw line to cut the lead to 73-70.

A missed three-pointer by Marcus Carr was followed by a last-ditch three-pointer from Grant Sherfield to force overtime with seven seconds left.

The overtime period started off rocky with the Longhorns taking control with a 6-0 run capped off by a Timmy Allen layup. Texas pushed their lead to 84-77 before Oklahoma fought back to make it 84-83.

A missed free from Texas guard Tyrese Hunter gave Oklahoma hope to tie it but Sam Godwin’s floater wouldn’t go in, and the Sooners fell by a final score of 85-83.

The game turned on its head when the Sooners went seven minutes without a field goal. Thee could never regain control of the game. Both Sooners’ losses to Texas this year have been winnable games that came down to the waning moments. But in both games, the Sooners couldn’t finish the job.

Oklahoma drops to 13-14 (3-11 Big 12) and will look to rebound from the Red River loss Tuesday night with the Texas Tech Red Raiders at home.
