Oklahoma Sooners No. 23 in 247Sports 'way too early' 2023 power rankings

The machine that is college football never sleeps. Even before Georgia’s demolition of TCU in the national championship game, the good folks at 247Sports are already making “way too early” rankings for 2023.

How great is this sport?

After the turbulent 2022 campaign, there’s no telling how people will view the Sooners heading into the 2023 season. They could either wind up at the back end of the top 25 or unranked entirely. And both would be reasonable projections for the Sooners. In Brad Crawford’s latest ranking, however, they are No. 23.

Perhaps the 12-team playoff will work after all. With those 12 teams, it would be a lot of fun to watch.

Putting the Longhorns ahead of every other Big 12 team could be taken a lot of ways. But remember, they are returning a lot of starters, including their QB. They also just reeled in yet another top-five recruiting class. TCU will be losing their starting QB and one of the best players in the country Quentin Johnston.

Honestly, rankings in any form should be the last thing on any OU fan’s mind. After a 6-7 season, being anywhere near the top 25 of anything is surprising. Yes, Texas and USC both being ahead of OU in the rankings is annoying to see. Yes, there are four Big 12 teams ahead of the Sooners.

None of that matters.

The Sooners can start worrying about rankings again when a trip to the College Football Playoff is on the line. Until then, all they can do is win the games that are on the schedule, which for 2023, is still a mystery.

The infusion of talent through recruiting and the transfer portal could be what ends up getting the Sooners out of the Big 12 basement in 2023. Several big names have already joined the crimson and cream out of the portal, and perhaps more are on the way.
