Sooners prospects on the move in the top 20 of 247Sports updated 2023 rankings

While the 2021 season inches to its end, recruiting is about to hit its absolute peak season as the 2022 recruiting class closes in on early signing day in just a few weeks. While Oklahoma looks to put its finishing touches on an already strong 2022 recruiting class, they’ll begin to turn their attention in earnest toward adding to their No. 1 ranked 2023 recruiting class.

2021 has been very fruitful for Oklahoma’s 2023 class as several high-profile prospects gave their commitments during the Spring and Summer. With more information to glean from the 2021 high school season, 247Sports has updated their 2023 recruiting rankings.

The centerpiece of the class is Malachi Nelson, the uber-talented signal-caller from Los Alamitos, California standing at 6 foot 3 with the ability to make the ball jump out of his hand. Many believe there may not be a better QB with a higher ceiling than that of Nelson. Previously, he was ranked as the third-best prospect but after an incredible season, has leapfrogged Lebbeus Overton for number two. The Sooners also are in contention for Overton’s services but they’ll need to fight off Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, Florida, and Arkansas to gain the commitment from the talented defensive line prospect.

Nelson sits behind Arch Manning as QB2 on the board and also as the second overall prospect in the nation. Manning’s name and game speak for themselves. It’s likely we’ll see comparisons between Lemon and Manning for years to come.

Joining him in the top 20 is his high school teammate, best friend, and future college teammate in Makai Lemon. Lemon was previously ranked 15th in the nation and moved up to No. 13.

Lemon is an intriguing prospect due to his athletic gifts. He’s listed as an athlete but it looks like initially, he’ll be joining the Sooners to play wide receiver. He’s ultra-smooth, can run, catch effortlessly, and has years of chemistry with Nelson.

Another Oklahoma Sooners commit finding himself on the move in 247Sports latest rankings is Brandon Inniss, a wide receiver out of Florida that plays at American Heritage. Due to an injury to the team’s starter, Brandon Inniss moved to quarterback.

It seems fairly obvious him spending his junior season mostly at quarterback and the rise of other wide receiver prospects has likely affected how evaluators view him. Nevertheless, he remains a top 20 player and will hopefully get to spend his spring, summer, and final high school season showing just why he is one of the twenty best players in the nation.

Oklahoma has built a talent-rich foundation for its 2023 recruiting class. While there’s still a long time before these guys can put pen to paper and make it official, Lincoln Riley and Co. have to feel good about the way they’ve positioned themselves heading into the new year. They’ve got one of the five best players in the country and Nelson will make an impact on the recruiting trail over the next calendar year.

They’ve assembled quite a few offensive skill players who are rated extremely high. Adding talent in the trenches and on the defensive side of the ball will be Oklahoma’s priorities as the 2023 class becomes the focus of their attention moving forward.
