The Denver Broncos have selected the former Oklahoma safety Delarrin Turner-Yell with the No. 152 overall pick in the fifth round of the NFL draft.
The three-year starter was a stabilizing presence in the Sooners’ defensive backfield when healthy. That, however, is the caveat with Turner-Yell. His health has been a problem for him. In his three years as a starter, he played a full season once in 2019.
Turner-Yell is the fourth Sooner off the board and will join Nik Bonitto in Denver. The Broncos seemed to like what they saw in Norman last season.
The Broncos came into the draft needing a safety, and one that has the athleticism and speed of Turner-Yell is a fun thing to have when going up against Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Los Angeles’ Justin Herbert four times per season. Throw in Derek Carr and the Las Vegas Raiders and that’s three pass-heavy offenses going up against the Broncos twice a year.
If there’s one thing the Broncos do well, it’s developing defensive backs. After trading a bounty of picks to the Seattle Seahawks to get Russell Wilson, they needed to hit on their later picks in this draft.
Turner-Yell won’t be a day-one starter, but he has all the attributes of an NFL safety. If he can stay healthy, this could end up being a steal for Broncos Country.
