We are days away from the rescheduled start of the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games. An extra year in the making and sadly, without fans to cheer the athletes on has made this year’s Games unique before they even begin; with unexpected stories bound to unfold from the time the Olympic Flame is lit until it is extinguished. Like every other Olympic Games, however, I plan to watch and follow as much of it as I can, and here is the #1 reason why…
Imagine if the NFL only played the Super Bowl every four years, or MLB played the World Series only during leap years. What if the Tampa Bay Lightning needed to wait three years to defend last year’s Stanley Cup instead of just a few months? That is the life of an Olympic athlete, who trains and practices for years, measuring themselves against some of the best IN THE WORLD in their chosen sport, but never able to capture the most coveted prize until the calendar reaches the right year.
To say that every Olympic athlete from every country sending their best has perseverance is an understatement. For the odds they need to overcome in order to qualify for events that will help them earn a spot on any Olympic team is like finding a million dollar lottery ticket. Their work is always done far away from the spotlight with the stage only made ready for them to perform every four years, or, in the case of this year’s Summer Olympics, five years.
To think that years of work, countless hours of waking up before dawn to train, finely tuning their bodies and perfecting their craft may all come down to one tenth or even one hundredth of a second is mind numbing to me. The fact that someone during the two weeks of competition may not be able to stand on the podium because of a fraction of a second is the definition of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat all in one moment, personified by world class athletes.
The journey that many athletes took just to get to Tokyo would normally be enough to earn them a front-page story in most newspapers … except now they are required to do their best when the world is watching or be considered a failure until the next games are held. To (once again) quote the Wide World of Sport … It is the human drama of athletic competition that brings me to my television to watch the Olympic Games, and I don’t care what color an athlete’s flag or uniform is, because words like “win” and “loss,” “happiness” and “heartbreak” don’t need a translator, only a camera lens to bring it all home.
That’s why I watch the Olympics, because in every sense, these athletes are the daredevils of the sports world, willing to do what they do just once and hope that it is their best effort.
