Aaron Ramsdale’s move to Arsenal, according to Gareth Southgate, helped him earn an England call-up.

Gareth Southgate has revealed that Aaron Ramsdale’s move to Arsenal aided his call-up to the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers in October.

The 23-year-old joined the Gunners for an initial fee of £24 million during the summer transfer window’s closing days and has since been assigned to Mikel Arteta’s No. 1 position.

Ramsdale has only surrendered one goal in four appearances for Arsenal.

His transfer to the Emirates came after he was named to Southgate’s Euro 2020 team to replace the injured Dean Henderson, who has explained his reasoning for picking the former Sheffield United and Bournemouth goalkeeper.

“Aaron was with us for the whole summer, so we were able to work with him and learn his capabilities,” the Three Lions manager explained.

“The transfer to a club with great expectations and a building-from-the-back style of play is a significant consideration for us. He’s adjusted nicely to the change.”

Ramsdale has impressed Arteta both on and off the field, and he shined in Sunday’s North London derby with two spectacular saves.

The goalkeeper stated after the game that he was upset with himself for Heung-min Son’s consolation goal as Arsenal won 3-1 courtesy to goals from Emile Smith Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Bukayo Saka, who has also been called up to Southgate’s team.

On Premier League Productions, Ramsdale stated, “I’d have wanted to have maintained a clean sheet, and I’m a little angry at myself for the goal.”

“I think I can save it if I maintain my body weight forward and it goes around the post if I keep my body weight forward.”

“But this place was rocking tonight,” he said, “the strikers were fantastic, the defenders were excellent, and I’m bouncing off this.”

“This has been an incredible day, and hopefully it will continue to be like this every time we play them.”

Ramsdale had denied the attempts of Harry Kane and Lucas Moura but admitted to being exhausted throughout the one-sided encounter.

“To be honest, I had cramping in my calves for around 20 minutes,” he said, adding, “I must have eaten four energy gels so I’ll be wide awake for a while.”

“We’ve been putting a lot of emphasis on defence, and Ainsley [Maitland-Niles] tried to get a block on it and got a deflection, which definitely didn’t help.”

“I was able to leap and get a hand on it, and luckily it came off the bar, where it was cleared by the ever-reliable [Takehiro] Tomiyasu, and we came away with only one goal against it and three points.”

Ramsdale will challenge Everton’s Jordan Pickford and West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone in England’s two World Cup qualifying matches against Andorra and Hungary next month.
