The fists were flying at the first padded practice for the New York Giants last week after a late night sparked an unexpected and physical team practice. Some observers warned about this being a bad sign for a franchise that has struggled in recent years, while one Hall of Famer offered a different take on the matter. So, what do you think: Are NFL training camp fights a good or bad sign for the upcoming season?

Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin was known for both his talent and passion during his playing days and brings that same passion to his job on the NFL Network as an analyst. On Thursday, one day after the New York Giants took to the practice field in full pads for the first time, Irvin was in midseason form when he passionately discussed a fight that broke out among the players and took the opposite view of those who said the events of the day were a bad sign, saying:

“And the Giants on the first day of pads are out here competing so they end up in a brawl. Are you joking? That is incredible. Because if you’re competing at practice, on what I call the battleground, you’re going to have so much fun and win on what I call the playground, on game day. That was incredible. I love the Giants fighting on the first day of pads. And everyone saw this incorrectly. You got to see this the right way. Then I said ‘Michael, that’s why God has you on TV to bring it to ’em right.’ Yeah, I gave it to you right.”

While during his rant, Irving said that head coach Joe Judge and his staff would be “high-fiving” each other after the fight, Judge himself had the team run 100-yard sprints after practice to remind players that dumb football is bad football, and taking dumb penalties, such as getting into fights is bad football, even during practice. Those who follow the team on a regular basis pointed out the fight might be a sign of an immature roster that doesn’t know how to practice well yet and may take that flaw onto the field once the bell rings and the season begins.

I do respect the opinion of Michael Irvin and would agree in some circumstances that having tempers flare up between the offense and the defense on the practice field can be good; but in this case, with a second-year head coach, the needle is probably more on the negative than positive side. If the New York Giants have a good season, those like Michael Irving who endorsed the fight will likely remind us of what they said; just as those who felt otherwise will point out the team’s flaws when bringing up the fight if Big Blue is back near the top the draft board next spring.

The only person who knows if what happened at practice is good or bad should be the head coach; because if the fight was a surprise and not something he desired, he is already misreading his team, leaving him a lot of work to do between now and the start of the 2021 season. If this fight was the goal of Judge and his staff, then they are one-for-one in understanding how to build up their team to get ready for game day … either way, just as the importance of winning or losing preseason games can only measured after the regular season is over. Because having the fight to win in August is only important if your team is still playing meaningful football games in December and January; only then we will know if the New York Giants’ melee was a good for bad sign for 2021.
