Erling Haaland will decide his next club very soon and the Arsenal project should be a consideration for the Norwegian striker.
Arsenal’s project might be exactly what Erling Haaland is looking for if Mikel Arteta and Martin Odegaard can convince him.
I know, I know. The idea of Erling Haaland rocking up at the Emirates next season is a fanciful one at best. The Norwegian international is one of, if not, the hottest prospect on the planet. Take Kylian Mbappe out of the equation and there is no debate.
Arsenal are a side far from the peak of their powers and no longer the title-challenging side of the late 90s and early 00s. However, Erling Haaland is proving to be a player not simply swayed by a badge but instead, considers what is best for him.
What was interesting to hear recently was transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano speak about the motives behind Haaland’s decision-making. The Italian revealed that the striker would be open to joining a club for the project and this is where a more tangible link to Arsenal emerges.
Romano said on his podcast, Romano said “Haaland has always decided. Together with his father Alfie and with his agent Mino Raiola and with his family, people close to him considering many factors.
“It is not just about money, or about the badge because if he wanted the badge if he wanted money. Salzburg or Juventus, you go to Juventus, and he decided to go to Salzburg.
“Man United or Borussia Dortmund, you go to Man United and he decided to go to Dortmund. So it is about the project, it is about the manager, it is about what they want to do.”
For Arsenal, the word ‘project’ or ‘process’ has been at the centre of the discussions about the club’s plan. Sometimes to comical meme levels of usage, however, it cannot be underestimated how far the club has moved since Arteta’s arrival.
Some may look solely at the league finishes in the last two seasons and see no change. However, the way Arsenal is run in addition to how it operates and makes its choices has dramatically shifted. This takes time and the competitiveness has suffered as a result despite an FA Cup win in 2020.
This season represents the start of the effects of that hard work coming to the surface and showing on the field. Qualifying for the Champions League this season is very possible and would elevate the club back to levels in the transfer market previous temporarily inaccessible.
Haaland’s obsession with the elite European competition made a move impossible without it but should Arsenal qualify, the door opens ajar. With a group of young players too to build around and his compatriot Martin Odegaard a vital cog in the machine, perhaps the 21-year-old would consider linking up at club level.
“You need minutes,” said Haaland last year about the 23-year-old Arsenal man. “All they have to do is put him in the line-up and leave him to play. We know how good Odegaard can be. When he gains confidence with the ball, you know incredible things can happen.”
If Haaland wants to become a club legend, then there are few clubs on earth where Arsenal can provide you with that status. Growing with this youthful group and taking the Gunners back to the top would without a doubt secure Haaland’s iconic figure in the club’s history.
A pipe dream maybe. But without Arsenal having these lofty ambitions in football and the transfer market, why try at all? The summer could be a very exciting time and I for one am ruling nothing out.
