Arsenal will be able to finalize the £76.8 million Lautaro Martinez deal thanks to Romelu Lukaku’s one-word verdict

Arsenal’s prospects of acquiring a new striker this summer might hinge on Romelu Lukaku.

The Gunners have been linked with a deal for Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez in the last week as a possible replacement for Alexandre Lacazette, who is receiving attention from Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Lukaku, on the other hand, might jeopardize Arsenal’s ambitions to conclude a move for the Argentina international, which is reportedly valued at £76.8 million.

It remains to be seen whether the Blues can reach a deal on the Belgium international after Sky Italia reported on Monday evening that the Serie A winners had rejected a proposal of £85 million-plus unwanted winger Marcus Alonso.

The concern for Arsenal is that if Inter does end up cashing in on Lukaku, it would surely end their pursuit of Martinez as it is unlikely that Simone Inzaghi’s side would be open to selling their two most prized assets in the same transfer window.

That’s regardless of their well-documented financial situation which states they still need to balance the books, despite selling Achraf Hakimi to Paris Saint-Germain for an initial £51.3m fee earlier in the summer.

With that said, the Gunners have reason to be optimistic.

While Lukaku’s return to Chelsea would entail completing some unfinished business, there’s no assurance he’d be amenable to a second stint.

The striker was signed by Chelsea a decade ago, but he was never given a chance and moved to Everton permanently in the summer of 2014 before joining Manchester United three years later.

As a consequence, he views his tenure at Stamford Bridge as a “failure.”

With Lukaku’s recent admission that a return to the Premier League is improbable, that one-word conclusion might be good news for Arsenal.

This is due to the fact that keeping Lukaku at the San Siro would increase Arsenal’s chances of signing Martinez.

And, according to the aforementioned Sky Italia source, Inter is more likely to split ways with Martinez this summer, as Lukaku is seen as ‘untouchable’ this summer due to his four-year deal.
