Xtra Time Web Desk: In a commanding performance Rohit Sharma led Team India secured a resounding victory over Pakistan in Colombo, winning by a massive margin of 228 runs in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 game at the R Premadasa stadium on Monday. Despite multiple rain delays since Sunday, India displayed exceptional cricketing prowess throughout the match. The batting duo of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul played a pivotal role, amassing an unbeaten 233-run partnership for the third wicket. India posted a formidable total of 356 for 2 in their allotted 50 overs, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill contributing 121 for the opening wicket.
Pakistan faced a daunting target of 357 runs and struggled from the outset. Jasprit Bumrah struck early, removing Imam-ul-Haq, while Hardik Pandya claimed the prized wicket of Babar Azam. Shardul Thakur dismissed Mohammed Rizwan, and Kuldeep Yadav trapped Fakhar Zaman, leaving Pakistan in disarray.
Kuldeep Yadav emerged as India’s bowling hero, claiming a sensational 5-wicket haul for just 25 runs in 8 overs. This achievement made him the fifth Indian bowler to achieve such a feat against Pakistan in ODIs, joining the ranks of Sourav Ganguly, Arshad Ayub, Venkatesh Prasad, and Sachin Tendulkar.
Virat Kohli’s exceptional performance included an unbeaten century (122 not out off 94 balls), marking his 47th ODI hundred. He also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record to become the fastest player to reach 13,000 ODI runs and recorded his fourth consecutive century at the Premadasa Stadium. KL Rahul contributed significantly with his maiden century against Pakistan and his first in one-day internationals since March 2021 against England.
With this emphatic 228-run victory, India achieved their largest-ever margin of victory against Pakistan in ODIs. India will now prepare to face Sri Lanka in their second Super 4 match of the Asia Cup on Tuesday, returning to the field for the third successive day.
