Xtra Time Web Desk: Amid persistent rainfall casting doubts on the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 games, originally slated for Colombo, the decision has been made to keep them in the Sri Lankan capital. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Tuesday announced that the remainder of the tournament will be played in Colombo.
Rainfall has plagued the Sri Lankan leg of the tournament, resulting in the cancellation of the much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash on Saturday and a shortened 23-overs game between India and Nepal on Monday.
Colombo experienced heavy rainfall over the weekend and Monday, prompting the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to consider alternative venues. However, the ACC has ultimately chosen to stick with the R Premadasa Stadium, which is also set to host the final.
In response to calls for moving the tournament to the UAE, Asian Cricket Council chief Jay Shah and BCCI Secretary addressed concerns about the T20 format used in the Asia Cup 2022 edition in the UAE. They emphasized that One-day matches in the UAE in September could lead to player fatigue and increased injury risks, especially before the ICC Cricket World Cup. The decision to not host all the games in Pakistan was made in consensus with stakeholders.
Former Pakistan Cricket Board chief Najam Sethi had advocated for hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan, but after a denial, he proposed hosting five games in Pakistan and the rest in the UAE. This proposal was not accepted, and BCCI declined to move the tournament to the UAE, citing reasons that only Mr. Shah could explain according to Sethi.
