Last year the NFL world saw the departure of quarterback Tom Brady from the New England Patriots after two decades of him playing there. A year and a half later the world’s football (soccer) world found out superstar Lionel Messi would not be returning to Barcelona. With one star already finding glory in another home and the second likely to do the same, the question some are asking is interesting: Which sports departure is bigger, Tom Brady’s or Lionel Messi’s?

The departure of Tom Brady from the New England Patriots was foreseen by many in the winter of 2020. While fans of the Patriots held out hope that the two faces of their double dynasty, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, could work out their differences, the writing was on the wall at Gillette Stadium and the divorce was finalized.
Lionel Messi was not synonymous with Barcelona on the pitch, his personality was the heartbeat of the football club from the time he left his native Argentina as a 14-year-old, making his 20-year legacy in Spain larger than any athlete has had with any franchise in any sport. Like Brady is to the NFL, many consider Messi the greatest player in the history of his sport. With his departure coming weeks after some felt a deal was in place to retain the 34-year-old, the shock of the game’s biggest star will be discussed for years to come, before and after he finds a new pitch to call home.
As you can probably guess, the debate between whose departure is more significant is shorted lived for those sports fans outside of the United States. That’s because while Tom Brady leaving New England was big for America’s 21st century game, the world game of football doesn’t see players like Lionel Messi leave their team every day, and probably won’t know how to deal with it for a while.
Sorry Mr. Brady, but for once in your life something you have done has been overshadowed by another star in the sports universe. True it did take a year and a half for it to happen, but at least for now, the departure of Lionel Messi will be held as the biggest sports departure in history.
