The sport of Formula One took a page out of the NBA’s playbook Sunday when Lewis Hamilton drew contact on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix, sending the season’s point leader Max Verstappen to the hospital. Some opponents question if Hamilton’s used a dirty tactic in order to win, while the British-born driver blamed Verstappen for the accident in real time and stuck to his story after the race. Did Hamilton drive dirty in order to win his home Grand Prix?

The British Grand Prix started off with some tension when, on the opening lap, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton entered a turn side by side with only the latter exiting the turn with his car intact and the Dutch-born Verstappen taken to the hospital for a checkup. That’s because as both drivers made their right-hand turn, the back right tire of Verstappen was touched by Hamilton’s front left wheel. The 190 miles-per-hour contact sent the 2021 points leader into a spin and toward a tire barrier off the track, ending his day.

The move was called “dangerous” by Red Bull, the main sponsor of Verstappen, and caused F-1 to impose a ten-second penalty on Hamilton. It was a penalty that would not stop the British native from winning his ninth Grand Prix on home soil, a win that when celebrated, he was called “disrespectful” and “unsportsmanlike” for doing so. When assessing the ten-second penalty, the race stewards said Hamilton did have “room available to the inside,” “did not avoid contact,” and was “predominantly at fault” for the accident.

Entering the race, Hamilton trailed Verstappen by 33 points, with his win and the 25 points that comes along with it, and with Verstappen earning zero points, that gap is now just eight points. Trust me, Lewis Hamilton can handle a car, even at 190 miles-per-hour better than 99% of the world can handle their car at 35 MPH. Any world-class driver knows how to make contact with another car to put them into a spin, and Hamilton picked a spot on the track where Verstappen would have a long spin before rolling on gravel and into a barrier, making the risk of injury small.

Was what Lewis Hamilton did a dirty move? Probably, but since intent can never be added into a rulebook since it’s impossible to prove without a doubt, it was a move that Hamilton and many other drivers have or will use at least once in their careers. But when you are the best in history and competing on your home track, the chances of being pulled from the race is minimal, something that Hamilton knew … and being able to pick up 25 points in a sport that awards driver’s points to the top ten finishers is huge since it resets the rest of the Formula One season for the top two drivers.

Lewis Hamilton is a talented enough driver to make an intentional act look like an accident and got away with a ten-second penalty that he was able to overcome and win on Sunday. If he wins the 2021 Drivers’ Championship by less than 25 points, people may point to this race and call the title tainted. However, in most sports, cheating or breaking the rules don’t preclude you from winning a championship, which is why almost anyone in Lewis Hamilton’s position would probably have done the same thing at the British Grand Prix Sunday.
