It has been confirmed that Jadon Sancho has returned to Manchester United and will not be involved in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Poland.
Early this week, the 21-year-old suffered a minor injury in training and missed Thursday’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Hungary.
An official Football Association statement states that Sancho will likely be fully recovered in time to face Newcastle next weekend following further assessment.
The fitness questions surrounding Sancho, however, will give Cristiano Ronaldo the opportunity to start against Steve Bruce’s side as he attempts to play for United again after a 12-year absence.
A five-day period of self-isolation will follow the 36-year-old’s arrival in Manchester yesterday, and he will train with his new teammates next week.
As Marcus Rashford remains injured, Dan James has been sold to Leeds and Anthony Martial is out of favour, it seems increasingly likely that Ronaldo will play a major part in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new-look Manchester United side.
The five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or received another boost earlier this week with news that the Premier League had given United permission to allow him to reclaim his iconic No.7 shirt from Edison Cavani, who will wear No.21 this season.
In response to his new teammate’s generosity, Ronaldo said: ‘I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to wear the number seven shirt again.’ My sincere gratitude to Edi [Cavani] for this wonderful gesture.
