Have The Warriors Given Up On James Wiseman? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
Just one year ago the Golden State Warriors held the second overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and took James Wiseman. Now, heading into the 2021 NBA Draft, the league is buzzing that the franchise will try to reboot their dynasty by trading the seven foot, 20-year-old for a star player. Is Golden State giving up on James Wiseman after one season, or admitting they made a mistake last year?
It is no secret the Golden State Warriors want to return to NBA glory by reworking their roster and compete for championships again. They, in theory, had a chance to find a young, inexpensive piece to that puzzle last year with the second pick in the NBA Draft when they took James Wiseman. After an 11.5 PPG season where Wiseman was limited to 39 games and 21.5 minutes on average per outing, it appears that Golden State is already willing to part with Wiseman and one of their two first round picks in this month’s draft to make a quick, massive improvement to their roster.
By taking James Wiseman second last year, Golden State passed on the eventual Rookie of the Year, LaMelo Ball, who was selected by the Charlotte Hornets. Now, it is true that “basketball aficionado” LaVar Ball didn’t think his son would be a good fit with the Warriors, perhaps helping to steer him away from the team in the Bay Area, but early returns are that Golden State missed out on a good player by passing on LaMelo in last year’s draft. (By the way, LaMelo Ball disagreed with his father and wanted to be drafted by the Warriors!)
With the franchise facing decisions such as giving Steph Curry a second max contract, the Warriors are at a crossroads in the history: Should they try to relight the flame that saw their team reach five straight NBA Finals with many of the same players; or should the tear down their roster and play for draft picks and let the Western Conference open up again in a few years? If they were going to do the latter, then taking a player like Wiseman or Ball would have been the smart move last year; but since they don’t feel their seven-footer can be a part of the team they want to put together going forward, it makes me wonder what their plan was before last year’s draft in the first place? Because it feels like they want to make the trade they tried to last year by dumping Wiseman to get an established player and make another title run.
Wiseman clearly landed with a team that was hesitant at best to draft him, and now needs to dump him to obtain a player like Paul George from the Clippers, CJ McCollum from Portland or Pascal Siakam from Toronto, provided they are willing to throw in one or both of their first-round draft picks this year (they have the 7th and 14th picks as of July 1st).
In short, the Golden State Warriors made a mistake last year AND they are giving up on James Wiseman rather than try to build around him, since they clearly don’t want to wait. As they say you can’t teach height, which is why Wiseman could be a ten-year journeyman or solid role player in the NBA, but as we reach the summer, it is clear nothing will come of his career in Golden State since a team that should have never drafted him is already looking to trade him. Hopefully, when they are done, some of the people involved in that decision will be looking for new jobs, or the head coach will understand there was once a basketball world that was played without launching three-point shots all game long and seven-foot players were coveted and rarely traded.
I feel bad for you Warriors fans, because it feels like the people running the show out there may not know what they are doing anymore now that their veteran stars are leaving or getting hurt, making the next few seasons difficult to watch while they try, but fail to rebuild a dynasty.
