The College Football world was shocked when it was announced that Notre Dame’s head football coach Brian Kelly was leaving the program for the head coaching job at LSU. Now, Notre Dame fans can be angry all they want at how Kelly told his players he was leaving; but if you focus on the how, you will miss the real reason why he left Notre Dame. It’s a reason that should leave those who cheer for the team very, very scared.
Notre Dame’s mystique put them in the same category as teams like basketball’s Lakers and Celtics, baseball’s Yankees and hockey’s Canadiens, although each has had different levels of success. Being the head coach of the Fighting Irish is like working for one of those other teams, it means something, at least, it used to generations ago.
Without a national title since 1988, the lure of attending Notre Dame is not there for this generation of players who have not seen the school win a championship. As a result, going to a “football school” is a much better option for those looking to make the NFL or at least find out if they can compete against the best in college football … something that Notre Dame’s schedule doesn’t allow.
Brian Kelly’s departure tells Notre Dame one simple truth: That the Irish may never win another national championship the way college football is played. Which is why their head coach went to the Southeastern Conference, a place that is always penciled into the playoffs and where recruiting will be easier with different academic rules. Something Notre Dame has never changed for athletes.
Sure, Notre Dame is ranked almost every season. That’s because voters like to see the Irish play meaningful games; but the difference between being fourth, sixth or eighth in today’s college football format is wide, and Brian Kelly knew he had done all he could to cross it, but failed, settling for Bowl Games that take care of the players, but don’t add to his resume or the legacy of Notre Dame football.
Could LSU and Notre Dame clash one day when the college football playoff expands to eight, ten, or even twelve teams? You bet they can … and I’m sure there are scores of people in South Bend and around the world who root for the Fighting Irish and would love to take down the Tigers and their former head coach.
