Click Next For Twitter ReactionsThe American League East has an emerging star named Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. who is taking Major League Baseball by storm this season by taking aim at the American League Triple Crown. The Blue Jays first baseman is putting up historic stats so far this season, justifying his place atop the upcoming All-Star game voting. Despite being only 22, how much will he make if/when the Blue Jays decide to treat him the way the Padres treated Fernando Tatis, Jr. remains to be seen. However, the question remains, how much is Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. worth?
You can call him a star without a home, because due to Covid-19 Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. hasn’t played a home game in Toronto since his rookie season in 2019. That fact alone makes it even more impressive that Guerrero is leading all of Major League Baseball in All-Star votes.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. leads the AL in BA (.344), HR (21) and RBI (55).
He’s the first player, age-22 or younger, to lead his league in all 3 triple crown categories 60+ games into a season since Hall of Famer Al Kaline in 1955 h/t @EliasSports pic.twitter.com/tL0UZSllpS

Now in his third year with the team, Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. has taken it upon his shoulders to lead the team into the American League playoffs by posting numbers that involve the memory of players named Rogers Hornsby, Lou Gehrig and Ted Williams. That’s because Guerrero has a chance to lead the American League in not just the Triple Crown categories of batting average, home runs and runs batted in, but in the more modern stats of on-base and slugging percentage, something only those three all-time greats have ever done over the course of a season.
Under the current collective bargaining agreement, Guerrero cannot become a free agent until after the 2025 season, making his $605,400 contract this season one of the best deals in MLB history. How the new CBA will look after the current one expires this winter will be a hot topic of discussion between the players and owners this winter. However, that does not mean the Blue Jays are banned from signing their All-Star first baseman to a long-term deal.
Having just turned 22 in March, Guerrero is the same age that Fernando Tatis, Jr. was when San Diego locked him up to a 14-year, $341 Million deal in February. Normally players focus harder during their “walk year,” the name given to the final year of their contract, in order to have maximum leverage when entering free agency. If Guerrero can enter this offseason with an AL MVP and/or a Triple Crown trophy on his mantle, even without any chance in the CBA, his leverage would not be any higher to force the Blue Jays to sign him to a long-term deal and one that pays him among the Majors elite players.
The over/under that most people expect Guerrero to shoot for is $30 Million a season, a number that would surpass Tatis by almost $6 Million a season and move the Blue Jays star into the neighborhood of players named Manny Machado ($32M/Year) Nolan Arenado ($35M/Year) and Mike Trout ($37 Million/Year). As a player who doesn’t play a highly demanding position as any of the other stars mentioned, and as one who hasn’t had a home field advantage in two seasons, taking the chance of giving Guerrero a 10+ year contract doesn’t seem as daunting for Toronto as it did for the other franchises those stars play for.
On the other side of the coin, however, without a Major League revenue level for two years, the “Toronto” Blue Jays may not have the funds needed to give their bargain baseball star a raise, running the risk that the new CBA may take away some years of control away from them, allowing Guerrero to leave without ever inking a deal.
To think any player is putting up the numbers Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. is at the same time Major League Baseball needs to crackdown on foreign substances being used by pitchers is remarkable. That tells me that what this young star is doing is not a fluke and should be rewarded as soon as possible, even if that means giving him a fair deal and avoiding arbitration over the next few years.
As for how much he is worth: If he helps the Blue Jays make the postseason, he is already worth more than Mike Trout, and if he somehow matches up with Machado, Tatis and the rest of the San Diego Padres in the World Series, forget paying him $30 Million a year, because Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. may become a $40 Million ballplayer and the new face of Major League Baseball.
