Ian Wright sends strong verdict on ‘whole problem’ statement with Arsenal after Aston Villa win

After Arsenal tightened their grip on fourth place with a win at Aston Villa, Ian Wright laughed off suggestions about the club’s priorities.

The pundit, who was a member of Arsenal’s Premier League-winning squad in 1997-98, was among those who erupted in applause after Bukayo Saka’s historic goal gave the Gunners victory over Aston Villa. Even though Wright’s former teammate Martin Keown downplayed their chances of qualifying for the Champions League, the win helped Mikel Arteta’s side move closer to a fourth-place finish.

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves spoke out after the London side’s response to their win at Molineux in February, and it wasn’t the first time celebrations drew attention.

Wright, on the other hand, was unconcerned about suggestions that the celebrations were part of the problem in Arsenal’s quest for bigger and better things.

Arsenal hasn’t finished in the top four since coming in second place behind Leicester City in the 2015-16 season. They’ve finished eighth in the last two seasons, their lowest finish in a quarter-century, and this is their first season without European football since Wright was a player with the club.

One fan wrote on Twitter, “Arsenal players and fans, especially @IanWright0, celebrating win over Villa and cementing their fav position 4th as if they have won CL.” “That is the @Arsenal’s entire problem!”

Wright, on the other hand, was having none of it. To emphasize his point, the 58-year-old quoted the post and added several ‘blowing a kiss’ emojis.

Wright had previously shared video of his victory celebrations. Philippe Coutinho came as close as anyone to ruining Arsenal’s day, drawing a late save from goalkeeper Bernd Leno, but the visitors’ one goal was enough.

“Bernd Leno did fantastically well when he came [into the team] today,” Wright said on DAZN, referring to the German’s replacement for Aaron Ramsdale, who was injured and unable to play. “A lot of pundits have been giddy about Arsenal and how weak they are due to their lack of leadership.
