Xtra Time Web Desk: The Indian team for the first ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday was on expected lines expect for Sanju Samson’s omission from the playing XI. The wicketkeeper batsman from Kerala missed the series opener due to an injury. According to BCCI, the Rajasthan Royals skipper sprained a ligament in his knee. Sanju’s injury meant birthday boy Ishan Kishan getting his maiden ODI cap along with Suryakumar Yadav.
Sanju was in great touch at the nets and also in the intra squad matches and was certain to get a nod in the playing XI. One has to feel for Samson as he had to wait a long time for his chances to come in the shortest format of the game. The ongoing Sri Lanka series would’ve been a great opportunity to stake his claim. Unfortunately he will have to wait for his chance yet again and most importantly, hope that he recovers from injury soon.
The injury to Sanju provides a perfect opportunity for Ishan Kishan. The wicket keeper batsman from Jharkhand impressed in his T20 debut for India against England when he scored a brilliant half century. With the T20 World Cup few months away, the Mumbai Indians cricketer would like to grab this opportunity with both hands.
Mumbai batsman Suryakumar Yadav also made his debut in the first ODI. Suryakumar’s selection in the playing XI was expected, given the form he has been in domestic cricket and IPL.
