India at Tokyo Olympics: Atanu Das stuns Korea’s Oh Jinhyek to reach Round of 16 in Men’s Individual Recurve

Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian men’s archer Atanu Das produced a stunning performance as he beat London Olympics gold medalist, Korea’s Oh Jinhyek to reach the Round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympics men’s individual recurve event on Thursday. The archer from Bengal Atanu put behind the disappointment of the men’s team event to showcase his class at the Yumenoshima Final Field in Tokyo.

Buoyed by the presence of his wife Deepika in tne stands, Atanu produced his best performance to eliminate Oh Jinhyek in a nerve-wracking shoot-off in his Round of 32 match that was tied at 5-5 at the end of 5 sets.

Atanu will now take on Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa in his Round of 16 match on Saturday.

Deepika will be in action for her Round of 16 match in the Women’s Individual Recurve on Friday and Atanu is likely to return the favour as support staff and fellow athletes have also taken up the role of cheerleaders in the absence of fans at the Olympic Games.

It was Oh who sealed the first set 26-25. However, Atanu handled the pressure well, shooting a string of 7 arrows in 9 to tie the 2nd and 3rd sets. In the fourth set Atanu got his first 10 to seal the 4th set 27-22. Oh uncharacteristically hit a 7.

Atanu was bang on the final set, finding 10, 9 and 9. It was matched by Oh and the match finished as a tie at 5-5.

In the shoot-off, Oh went first and hit a 9. And Atanu needed a 10 to seal the match and he did so to march into the Round of 16.
