Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian women boxer Pooja Rani defeated Algeria’s Ichrak Chaib to march into the quarterfinals of the women’s 75kg middleweight boxing at Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday. The reigning Asian champion won by a unanimous 5-0 decision against Chaib. The win takes Pooja a step closer towards assuring herself and India of a medal.

Pooja used all her experience to control the three-round bout against Chaib, who showed plenty of heart and energy but kept swinging wildly and missed her target. The 30 year old boxer from Bhiwani looked calm and composed against her opoonent.

Pooja is in the middle of one of her best year’s in the sport, having won the Asian Boxing Championship gold in May and a victory over world champion Atheyna Bylon in March this year at the Boxam International Tournament where she won silver. The country can hope Pooja continues her good show and give India a medal on a bigger stage like the Olympics.
