India at Tokyo Olympics: Deepak Punia loses to Nazem Amine in freestyle 86kg bronze medal match

Xtra Time Web Desk: Sport can be so cruel and who better than Indian wrestler Deepak Punia to know it as he lost to San Marino’s Nazem Amine is the men’s wrestling 86Kg category at Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. He just needed to defend the final 10 seconds but failed to do so, as he lost the bout 2-4 against Amine. Deepak Punia’s coach did appeal against the final decision but was ruled out much to the disappointment of the Indian wrestling contingent.  

Earlier India’s Ravi Kumar Dahiya lost the men’s freestyle 57Kg final to Zavur Uhuev of Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). The wrestler from Chhatrasal had to settle for silver. This is the second silver for India at Tokyo Olympics after Mirabai Chanu won silver in boxing on Day 1.

Ravi Kumar did put up a fight by was always chasing to keep pace with the Russian wrestler. The first period ended 4-2 in favour of the reigning world champion. The second period was no different as despite Ravi Kumar’s valiant effort to gain an upperhand, Uguev prevailed, winning the bout 7-4.

Zavur Uguev, who was the World champion in 2019 and World cup winner last year has now got a Olympics gold.
