Xtra Time Web Desk: On an otherwise disappointing Day 4 at the Tokyo Olympics 23-year-old Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain brought smiles to the country. Borgohain got the better of German pugilist Nadine Apetz at the Kokugikan Arena on Tuesday. She won by a split decision verdict to move into the quarter-final of the Women’s Welterweight division (64 to 69kg). She is now just a win away from sealing a medal for India. The semi-finalists are assured of at least a bronze in the sport at the Games.
Lovlina will face former world champion and 4th seed Chen Nien-Chin in the quarter-final of Women’s Welter on July 30. A win there will help her finish on the podium regardless of what happens in the semi-final.
Lovlina was at her counter-punching best against the senior Apetz on Tuesday. She started slow but grew into the contest, throwing some well-timed right jabs at Apetz who was also trying to make inroads in the first round which was a tight affair.
