India tour to England: Shubman Gill likely to miss test series due to injury: Report

Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India opener Shubman Gill is doubtful for the test series against England which starts at Trentbridge in Nottingham from August 4. As per reports, the opener may miss the series due to an ‘internal injury’. The exact nature of the injury is not known. Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was on stand might be included in the main squad.

It is believed that Gill has either sustained a calf muscle injury or hamstring tear which could take considerable time to heal. It is not clear how and when he picked up the injury. It is still not clear whether Gill’s condition warrants surgery ahead of the series starting August 4.

“There is a chance that Shubman could be ruled out of the whole Test tour even though it is still a month away. The injury is serious is what we have come to know,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Gill was part of the playing XI for the recently concluded ICC World Test Championship Final against New Zealand at Southampton. India suffered an embarrassing loss by eight wickets.

With still considerable time (five weeks) left for the first test, the team management is keeping their fingers crossed as far as availability of Gill is concerned for the first test match. If he does not recover in time the team management will have to turn to one of the other two openers in the squad; Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul, to start with Rohit
Sharma.

Meanwhile, the Indian cricketers are currently on a 20-day break after the WTC final, where they faced an 8-wicket defeat. The squad will travel to Durham on July 15, where they will undergo a camp..

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is trying to arrange a couple of warm up games for the Indian team.
