Xtra Time Web Desk: Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, participated in the traditional bell-ringing ceremony at Eden Gardens on 29th April before the clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capital. Although he is now the Director of Cricket of Delhi Capitals but homeland comes first. Gautam Gambhir being present at the Eden as the mentor of KKR, yet the first preference for ringing the bell was given to the Prince of Kolkata.

The ceremony took place in the presence of Cricket Association of Bengal officials including President Snehasish Ganguly, Vice-president Amalendu Biswas, Honorary Secretary Naresh Ojha, Joint Secretary Debabrata Das, Honorary Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty, and other CAB members.

Sourav Ganguly, rang the famous bell at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London during the India-England Test in 2014. He wanted a similar bell at his home ground, Eden Gardens. Ganguly fulfilled his dream when he became the CAB president, In 2016, less than 48 hours before the start of the second Test between India and New Zealand at Eden, a silver-coated brass bell was installed at the BC Roy Club House End.

Continuing a tradition upheld by cricketing luminaries such as Kapil Dev, Clive Lloyd, Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar and Mitchell Starc. Ganguly, also the former president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, revisited the ceremonial act, reminiscent of his tenure as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The bell was ultimately rung by Saurav Ganguly for the very first time, after he became the president of BCCI on 21st Nov, 2021, just a couple of minutes before the start of the 3rd T20I between India and New Zealand.

Ganguly occupies a unique position in Indian cricket lore. During his playing career, he oscillated between being the most polarizing and adored figure on the team. His captaincy era stands out as one of the most extensively documented in recent memory. Beyond his skill on the off-side and his memorable partnerships with Sachin Tendulkar in ODIs, as well his leadership in moulding a youthful squad that remains his most enduring legacy. On May 20, 2013, the Government of West Bengal bestowed upon Ganguly the prestigious Banga Bibhushan Award. Additionally, he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2004, a prominent civilian accolade in India.
