Is It Bad Optics To Be Seen Training With Deshaun Watson? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
Three NFC North teams have used early NFL draft picks on quarterbacks over the last two years. Two of those teams saw their quarterbacks working out together recently with Deshaun Watson. This has people wondering if the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers should be worried over the bad optics of who their quarterbacks are working out this summer.

Videos surfaced this weekend that Justin Fields and Jordan Love were working out with current Houston Texans’ quarterback Deshaun Watson. Fields, a first-round draft pick for the Bears, and Love, a Packers first-round pick from last year’s draft are both represented by the same agent, David Mulugheta. It was the agent who released a video showing the two young QBs working with last year’s passing yardage leader while Watson is embroiled in troubling off-field issues that could see him miss the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Clearly teams cannot tell their players which agents to hire, and it appears agent David Mulugheta introduced these three quarterbacks to each other and, for whatever self-promoting reasons, decided to record and release a video of their workouts. I would want, however, to speak with Fields or Love and explain to them the phrase “bad optics” which is when any celebrity, such as an athlete, is doing something or spending time with people that some might deem toxic, a phrase that currently applies to Deshaun Watson.
It may be that Fields and Love didn’t know they were going to be recorded or have a video of their workout made public; however, once they set foot on the same field, even a practice field with Watson, all bets were off and news of what they were doing was bound to get out, casting doubt on their leadership abilities, at least in my mind.
Any agent, by definition, works for his client and should at all times be doing what is in their best interest. I don’t know why David Mulugheta would feel it was in the best interest of Justin Fields or Jordan Love to be spotted with Deshaun Watson, but the fact that both players were there should have the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers worried. They should be worried that their quarterbacks judgement may be lacking, and they are only doing what those who work for them are telling them to do, not the other way around.
The result is that I am now a little bit more concerned about the quarterback situations in Chicago and Green Bay. Honestly, those players should be able to find better role models to workout with, and their choice in agents leaves a lot to be desired.
