Having the physical tools to play NFL quarterback is an important part of having success playing the position. One league insider proclaimed one current NFL QB is not only the most physically gifted player at his position right now, but could ascend to an even higher level before his career is done. That quarterback is Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. Do you agree that he is the most gifted quarterback in the NFL right now?

There’s nothing like having an office temp come in over the summer while the boss is on vacation and start some trouble. Some might say that’s what happened when well-known football insider Peter King took a vacation from his “Football Morning in America” website and left his weekly column in the hands of a guest writer. The guest righter was Greg Cosell, long-time NFL Films analysis who, as part of his column had some high praise Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

“I think, speaking of Josh Allen, he is the most physically gifted quarterback in the NFL,” Cosell started one of his thoughts with before adding, “I stood a few feet away watching him throw, and I have never seen a ball come out of the hand of a passer like it does with Allen. It was otherworldly.”

Cosell continued by saying:

“The name that often comes up, and rightly so, when the talk is of the most physically talented quarterbacks of all time is John Elway. Allen is a much bigger man than Elway. Allen is the most intriguing quarterback I have watched and evaluated in all my years at NFL Films. It would not surprise me at all if we soon call Allen the most physically gifted quarterback the league has ever seen.”

Josh Allen finished second in the league’s MVP voting last year to Aaron Rodgers during a season in which he lead the Buffalo Bills to the AFC title game. Greg Cosell (nephew of the late Howard Cosell) has seen more NFL game footage than 99.9% of the world’s population, so when he called it “a statement of fact” that Josh Allen is the most gifted NFL QB right now, fans around the league better take notice.

As an old-school NFL analysis, Cosell is still looking for what a QB can do from the pocket with his arm first, and his legs second. This is why I am sure he, like many, believes that Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson has a lot of work to do before making a claim on the title of the NFL’s most gifted quarterback.

I understand there is always a need in sports to proclaim an athlete the second coming of (fill in the blank) or that “this” player can surpass another or even today’s athletes are overall more talented than their forefathers. With that said, however, Greg Cosell doesn’t have a dog in this fight when it comes to who the best or most talented QB is because he is calling it as he sees it and made this statement without prompting, since he doesn’t feel the topic is even up for debate.

Josh Allen cannot do anything during the 2021 season to catch or surpass the achievements of John Elway on any football field. For fans of the Buffalo Bills quarterback, it is great to know that the NFL is watching a player who has enough tools to be mentioned in the same sentence as the former Broncos’ QB, and perhaps, giving pause to all those who may wish to enshrine players like Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes in Canton prematurely.

I am not one who says a player from this era is better than one from another in any sport; but when I see someone with the history within the game he covers make a statement like this, I sit up and take notice … and what Greg Cosell just told you is that the AFC East has a new owner. His name is Josh Allen, and the sky is the limit for what this quarterback can do for the rest of his career.
