The NFC West is expected to be a battleground during the 2021 NFL season with all four teams expected to near or above .500. One team, the Los Angeles Rams, traded away quarterback Jared Goff this offseason for Detroit’s Matthew Stafford in a move that many are praising as a huge upgrade. However, there’s one player from a rival team that doesn’t expect Stafford, who brings zero career postseason wins with him to the West Coast, to improve the Rams. San Francisco 49ers safety Jimmie Ward will have a new quarterback to study this season after years of seeing Jared Goff throwing the ball for LA. The Rams finally gave up on their one-time NFC Championship winning QB when they traded Goff to Detroit in exchange for Matthew Stafford.

Jimmie Ward all but yawned when asked about Stafford being on the LA Rams when he said to Sports Illustrated:

“I like Stafford, but they still will have the same players that he’ll be throwing the ball to. He’s the same quarterback who was on the Detroit Lions and they still didn’t go to the playoffs, and they had Megatron [Calvin Johnson].  They went and traded Jared Goff, who went to the playoffs several times and went to the Super Bowl. Yeah, he lost. He went to the Super Bowl, though. I’ve yet to see that with Matt Stafford. I’m just going off of what I see. And I see Jared Goff got those boys to the Super Bowl.”

Ward is correct that, for whatever reason, the LA Rams have become the darlings of the NFL with many people predicting a stellar 2021 season, with oddsmakers putting them atop the over/under wins total in the NFC West at 10.5, tied with Ward’s 49ers’ teammates. There has long been a soft spot in the NFL and with the media who covers Matthew Stafford, a player who has long posted great stats, but as Ward points out, never has won anything. The former Lions signal caller has only three postseason appearance and never won a playoff game for Detroit; yet somehow trading for him is supposed to make the Rams a title contender.

Sorry, but I just don’t see it.

Rumor has it that San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan was upset when the 49ers missed out on trading for Stafford to replace their quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. So, Ward’s comments are likely a defense of “his quarterback” Jimmy G and a message to his head coach that sometimes the best transactions are the ones you don’t make.

The great part is that the 2021 season will prove or disprove how the NFL feels about Matthew Stafford, with the haters or supports being able to say “I told you so” by the first week in January, if not sooner. That’s because when Stafford is involved, the fate of your season is often determined long before the end of the season, and as fans in Detroit can tell you, it normally includes spending extra money for the holidays since you don’t need to worry about buying playoff tickets.
