KL Rahul likely to be available for Asia Cup 2023

Xtra Time Web Desk: In a significant boost for the Indian Cricket Team, KL Rahul is set to make a comeback for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, scheduled from August 30 to September 17. Despite undergoing thigh surgery, the right-hand batter seems fully prepared to participate in the Continental Cup. However, there is no update yet on Shreyas Iyer, who had back surgery in April.

Rahul missed the WTC Final and the West Indies series due to a hamstring injury, but he has now regained full fitness. He recently shared a video on Instagram showcasing his wicketkeeping and batting drills, dispelling earlier concerns about his readiness for the Asia Cup. His return to the squad will provide India with much-needed balance, as he is the designated wicketkeeper in the ODI format.

Currently, Ishan Kishan serves as the wicketkeeper-batter in ODIs, but with Rahul’s return, the LSG skipper, Rohit Sharma, will have the option to include an extra batsman or bowler in the playing XI. Rahul has been outstanding in ODIs over the past year, maintaining an average of over 50 and striking at 95.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer is yet to fully recover from his back surgery and has missed crucial matches like the IPL 2023, WTC Final, and the West Indies series. His likely absence from the Continental Cup opens up opportunities for Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav to solidify their positions in the ODI World Cup squad.
