Manchester City are keeping tabs on Mikel Arteta’s situation at Arsenal, with the Gunners yet to tie the Spaniard down to a new deal.
Arteta swapped the Etihad for the Emirates two years ago to take his first steps into management.
The Spaniard has at times appeared on the brink of losing his job in north London but he’s currently enjoying his best spell with the Gunners, who sit in fourth and are playing an appealing brand of football.
Arteta was considered a long-term option to succeed Pep Guardiola when he was his assistant in the north-west and City have maintained their interest in him since his move south, according to the Athletic.
Arsenal’s board attempted to sit down with Arteta at the start of this season to discuss a new deal but the 39-year-old didn’t feel it was the right time to extend his deal, given the importance of the campaign ahead.
Arteta is open to staying at the club and he’s happy in London, where his family are settled.
Guardiola’s deal at the Etihad expires at the same time as Arteta’s, though City would be keen to take his reign at the club into an eighth year.
However, Guardiola will take stock of his position next season and the Spaniard has aspirations to manage an international side.
