Manchester City Reignite Their Interest For Benfica’s Wing Back

In a recent report, Manchester Evening News stated that Manchester City are thinking of bringing SL Benfica wingback Alejandro Grimaldo to the Etihad Stadium. It is understood that the Sky Blues faced a massive blow as their priority target Marc Cucurella was snapped by Chelsea for a huge transfer fee which forced them to bring in Sergio Gomez, but the Etihad Club feels another fullback could strengthen the defensive department.

Grimaldo’s Impressive Run Of Form For Benfica Last Season

Grimaldo produced impressive displays down the left-flank as he enjoyed a solid campaign last season. He scored five goals and produced eight assists over 39 appearances across all fronts.

The Valencia-born sensation gave a good account of himself as a critical player for the Spanish outfit after averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.0 clearances per game in the Primeira Liga. He was also tidy with his ball distribution after completing 85% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese top flight (stats via whoscored).

Grimaldo is a composed defender who can time his tackles and make clever interceptions to win the ball back for his side. He has the ability to create space for himself and deliver accurate crosses from wide areas. The Spanish defender can take set-pieces and has the vision to find his teammates on the front foot.

The 26-year-old has caught the eye of Pep Guardiola due to his impressive performances in the left-back position. He would be a perfect fit for Guardiola’s playstyle and his arrival would allow the Spanish tactician to utilise the flanks and create more opportunities in the final third.
