Xtra Time Web Desk: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to pay a tribute to former World Cup winning India captain MS Dhoni by naming a seat after him at the Wankhede stadium. It is the same seat where MS Dhoni’s iconic six against Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara landed, sealing India’s World Cup triumph 12 years ago. According to a report in Indian Express, Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) plans to inaugurate the “seat” during the upcoming IPL 2023 match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians on April 8.
The Wankhede Stadium is known for its stands named after legendary players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant, Polly Umrigar, and Vinoo Mankad. However, this will be the first time that a seat will be named after a player, not just at the Wankhede stadium but in the whole country.
The idea of naming a seat after a player has been implemented in other parts of the world. New Zealand Cricket named a seat at Eden Park in Auckland after former all-rounder Grand Elliot, who hit a six that secured New Zealand’s first-ever spot in the final of a World Cup in 2015.
MS Dhoni is widely regarded as one of India’s most successful cricket captains, having led India to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2010 and 2016 Asia Cup, 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. The MCA’s decision to name a seat after him is a fitting tribute to his contribution to Indian cricket.
