Michael Kay Has A Huge Ego | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
The last week of July saw the end of an era in New York sports as Michael Kay, the longtime television voice of the Yankees announced “I will now not interact with anyone on Twitter” anymore. Kay, who perfectly embodies the arrogant Pinstripe franchise went on his rant during which he compared himself to someone he clearly feels he is equally as smart as … and when you hear who it was, you will understand why the New York Yankees are playing as well as their broadcaster performs, and why each deserve one another as also-rans on television and radio.
Social media is one of the worst named inventions in human history since it has made more people anti-social and anti-people than just about anything else ever created. Despite that, many in the sports media take to platforms like Twitter to gauge the fans reaction to events, which, during a baseball season, means talking about a big divisional series. For Michael Kay, who works for the YES Network, the television home of the Yankees, Twitter became a rough place to visit after losing three of four games to the Boston Red Sox from July 22-25. The series defeat moved the Yankees record against Boston to 3-10 in 2021 and made many fans of the Pinstripes unhappy.
During his Tuesday self-named “The Michael Kay Show” on ESPN Radio in New York, the Yankees’ broadcaster announced, “I will now not interact with anyone on Twitter,” and scolded his social media followers by telling them, “You robbed yourself of the chance of dealing with brilliance. It’s like you had a front row seat with Albert Einstein. Now, you’ve cut yourself off.”
I can remember when Michael Kay was a New York Daily News beat reporter covering the Yankees before landing a job doing their games on the radio, and then becoming their voice on the YES Network. I cannot, however, remember learning anything about baseball in print or from listening to Michael Kay in all the years he has been in the New York market. It would appear, however, that whoever works in Yankees Stadium has a source of knowledge and power that only those allowed in can tap into. Sadly, now that Kay has turned his back on the fans who follow him on Twitter, that power source will no longer be available to us … STOP THE MADNESS!
Michael Kay and everyone else directly or indirectly associated with the New York Yankees need to stop telling the world how much better they are at their jobs than everyone else is at theirs. While the franchise as a business is booming, with its value higher than almost every other sports team in the world, their on-field success over the last two decades has declined by their own standards, with the Steinbrenner family more interested in dollars than wins. So, for Michael Kay to act as if he is a member of the family or the club itself, or to even dream about comparing himself to Albert Einstein in any way is just ridiculous in so many ways it is beyond laughable.
Every sports fan has opinions about just about everything involving their teams. If Michael Kay or anyone else working or covering a team can’t accept that or see that other people have valid opinions that differ from their own, then they should be off all social media platforms, because their opinions are not worth listening to and they are too closed minded to add anything positive to any meaningful conversation. In essence, Michael Kay exemplifies everything he believes is wrong with Twitter, including how his egotistical beliefs bring down social media.
Goodbye and good riddance Mr. Kay … and thank you to Twitter for pressing on without the “Einstein of Baseball” no longer carrying the water for the New York Yankees.
