Mikel Arteta hits back at VAR officials over obvious error in Arsenal v Brentford stalemate draw at the emirates stadium

Leandro Trossard’s first goal for his new team was reversed after the officials made two mistakes when evaluating the incident, leaving Mikel Arteta furious and preventing the Gunners from taking an eight point lead at the top of the table.

Mason took three minutes to rule that Ethan Pinnock’s initial obstruction of Gabriel Magalhaes’ path to the ball did not interfere with play; Arteta questioned Mason’s ruling after the game.

The Arsenal boss referred to “the action when you get blocked when you are offside.” If you are offside, you cannot block.

“Looking at the photographs, you have to apply certain principles in defending and you do so by adhering to the rules and then all of a sudden you apply different rules then you have to adjust your principles,” the speaker said.

Since you will always have an edge if you are blocked, you don’t hold the line as high if you notify us beforehand.

Mason then added to that mistake by failing to verify that Norgaard had not advanced past Arsenal’s last defender, Ben White, before he pushed the ball into the path of Brentford’s leading scorer, Toney.

Offside

Chris Foy, a representative of the PGMOL and a referee expert for the Mail on Sunday, was in the Match Centre at Stockley Park on Saturday and stated, “Ivan puts the ball in the net and VAR Lee Mason certainly runs through the checks.”

In order to determine if there was an offside and whether Ethan Pinnock had blocked Gabriel throughout the buildup, VAR was used.

He examined the potential foul and determined there hadn’t been one, concluding that referee Peter Bankes hadn’t made a glaring mistake.

However, Christian Norgaard, whose cross Toney headed in, was offside in the sequence leading up to the goal.

The reality is that VAR didn’t thoroughly investigate with the lines, though. Simply put, the lines didn’t get shorter. That represents a human error.

“The goal would have been disallowed for offside if the lines had gone down.”
