Gabriel Martinelli’s one key trait has improved in recent weeks, according to Mikel Arteta.
Martinelli struggled to break into the Arsenal first team at the start of the season, appearing in only six of the north London club’s first 13 Premier League games.
However, the Brazilian international has started each of Arsenal’s last five Premier League games, scoring three goals in their last two matches against West Ham United and Leeds United.
Emile Smith Rowe has had to settle for a spot on the substitutes’ bench as a result of the 20-year-performances, old’s while former club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been banned from the first-term for ‘disciplinary reasons.’
Martinelli’s performance levels have risen recently, and Arteta has explained why, pointing to one key area of his game where he has improved.
‘It’s impossible to play every action at 100 mph,’ Arteta said.
‘It’s inefficient for you because you burn out after a few minutes and then you’re just chasing a situation rather than reading exactly what’s required.’
‘Gabriel is getting a lot better at it. We have to try to do so without losing his passion, energy, and ability to simply influence the game through his actions on the field.
‘What I like about him is that he trains extremely hard, is always willing to do more, and is not afraid to take risks.’
‘I can imagine, you’re not going to have any time on the ball, every time the ball is 50/50, he’s going to chase it and he’s going to use his body, his speed, his technical ability to get away from you, and you have to be careful, because he can attack you one v one, he can attack your back, he can make movements off the ball,’ Arteta said when asked about playing against Martinelli. In front of goal, he’s a real threat.’
