Just one day after Major League Baseball overcame the awful jerseys designed by Nike for the All-Star game, the company pivoted to the Open Championship in Sandwich, England. As they have done with the two previous major championships this year, Nike came out with some limited-edition themed golf shoes for those competing in The Open to wear. However, Nike’s idea for footwear was slightly outside the shoe box … but will it be a big hit with golf fans, or have everyone running?

To say that Nike has been made fun of this year for its design of Major League Baseball jerseys would be an understatement, because after this week’s All-Star Game, many fans of the game are saying “Don’t Do It Anymore” to the sneaker company.

One day after Nike’s poorly designed American and National League jerseys almost stole the show from an interesting All-Star Game, the company released images of their Open Championship shoes for golfers to wear this weekend. The theme used by designers was the games golfers can play in pubs, taprooms and even at the “19^th Hole.” As a result, the color scheme used for both shoe designs incorporate a cork shade of brown found on a dartboard and a shade of green to remind people of the felt covering a snooker or pool table.

Of course, as a non-golfer myself, I understand that like bowling shoes, golf shoes are only going to be worn at one place and while doing one specific thing. As a result, the white shoes with brown and green trim or all cork brown shows Nike created for The Open will always standout while worn on a golf course. They won’t, however, be easy to find matching clothes for unless you can find a pool table or dart board costume at Party City this time of year. I would also think, from a practical standpoint, that golfers would want to wear shoes that were broken in before taking a four-mile walk, the distance the 7,189-yard Royal St. George’s Golf Club covers in Sandwich. Which means on Thursday, there will be some sore feet at the 19^th Hole dartboard and pool table.

Perhaps it was because they are so use to Wimbledon’s all-white color dress or knowing this event was being held in England probably forced Nike to dial down the design team’s creativity a little bit. As a result, they were left with a few colors to play with, leaving us with this simple outcome. Consider how badly people have mocked the show giant this year with its new “City Connect” jerseys, their Darts and Pool golf shoes are tame and boring; but won’t get them in any trouble with golf fans. Therefore, it allows them to do what they can’t do in baseball, sell merchandise.
