Xtra Time Web Desk: Pakistankis pace bowler Wahab Riaz on Wednesday announced his retirement from International cricket. Waham will continue his career in franchise cricket worldwide. The 38-year-old left-arm fast bowler, who last represented Pakistan in December 2020, leaves behind a remarkable legacy. His international journey saw him participating in three ODI World Cups – 2011, 2015, and 2019 – and picking 237 wickets across 27 Test matches, 91 ODIs, and 36 T20Is.
In a media release, Wahab said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to represent Pakistan on the international stage. As I bid farewell to this chapter, I am thrilled to embark on a new adventure in franchise cricket, where I hope to entertain and inspire audiences while competing against some of the best talents in the world.”
Wahab burst onto the scene when he made his international debut in a One Day International against Zimbabwe in February 2008. Throughout his career, he etched his name in cricket history with standout performances. A standout moment was his five-wicket haul in the 2011 World Cup semifinal against India, a crucial contribution in Pakistan’s journey to the final. Another unforgettable display was his fiery spell against Australia’s Shane Watson during the 2015 World Cup quarterfinal in Adelaide.
In 2019, Wahab took an indefinite hiatus from Test cricket, aiming to concentrate on limited-overs formats. Now, after years of dedication and memorable contributions, he bids a fond farewell to the international stage. Although retiring from international cricket, Wahab Riaz’s prowess and experience will undoubtedly continue to shine through as he takes on new challenges in various global franchise leagues.
