Patriots Player Issues Warning To Tom Brady | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
With NFL camps set to open and the 2021 season only weeks away, we continue to get closer to Tom Brady’s return to New England. Unlike the first 20 years of his career when the future Hall of Fame quarterback wore the Patriots colors, Brady will enter Gillette Stadium as a visiting player when his Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers take the field. While some have asked how warmly or rudely Pats’ fan should greet and treat their returning hero, one New England player knows how he will welcome Brady, and it won’t be with a tear in his eye.

Byron Cowart is a defensive lineman for New England, but having been drafted in 2019 by the Patriots, probably was never put under the spell of Tom Brady that many of his long-time teammates and media members have been. As a result, when asked, the former Auburn Tiger didn’t mix words when asked about Brady’s return to New England as a member of the Buccaneers. Speaking with the “Patriots Way of Life” podcast, Cowart said:
“He’s done a lot of things for this organization … He’s coming back, but he’s coming back as an opponent, so I’m going to treat it like any opponent. We ain’t welcoming him, we just got to play him. There ain’t going to be no damn ceremony for him or nothing like that.”
I commend Byron Cowart for trying to downplay the return of Tom Brady within the Patriots locker room. I would go so far as to say that Cowart’s words were more for the fans that will be attending the Week Four game and not those who he is set to practice alongside with during the next few weeks.
I don’t think Cowart’s words will have much affect on the fans in the stands on the night of October 3rd when I expect New England fans to cheer Tom Brady as if he was still wearing his New England uniform. That’s the nature of sports, specifically free agency, because fans don’t get a chance to say goodbye to players before they leave. However this season, one year and another Brady Super Bowl win removed from New England, the Patriots fans will be able to cheer for their former quarterback one more time.
If the game is close and Brady has a chance to win late, I don’t know where the loyalty of Patriots fans will fall; however, for at least the first half of their game, I would expect a divided Gillette Stadium with each team cheered.
Cowart seems to be carrying the flag for the players in this case; but is not for the fans. The true drama of this game, however, will come when the clock reaches 0:00 and both sidelines pour out onto the field. That is when we will see if Tom Brady will seek out or ignore New England head coach Bill Belichick, because that is the reunion, either in the pregame or postgame that every camera in that stadium will be watching and waiting for, with it being newsworthy if it does or does not take place. For those sixty minutes of Week Four, however, players will play, coaches will coach and fans will be fans, with, at least for one night, their hearts and minds split as to what they want to see happen on the field.
