Nicolas Jover arrives at Arsenal this summer after leaving Manchester City last week and Pep Guardiola has told Gunners players what to expect from the set-piece coach
Arsenal have finally made a signing this summer.
However, despite links to the likes of Ben White, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares, it’s none of the aforementioned trio as Mikel Arteta has decided to make a change to his backroom staff.
As reported by Goal, Nicolas Jover has arrived at the Emirates Stadium after leaving Premier League rivals Manchester City when his contract expired last week.
Jover will take over from Andreas Georgson, who is heading back to his native Sweden with Malmo after spending one season with the Gunners, as a set-piece specialist – a similar role he held at the Etihad Stadium.
Of course, Arteta will be familiar with Jover having worked alongside him for a few months when he arrived at City from Brentford in the summer of 2019.
And as per L’Equipe, via Sport Witness, Pascal Grosbois – specialist set-piece coach himself – has revealed why Pep Guardiola opted to appoint Jover.
“L1 [Ligue 1] clubs do not yet see the usefulness of a coach dedicated to set pieces,” Grosbois said. “While at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola did not hesitate to hire a Frenchman, Nicolas Jover.
“It’s a shame, because there is untapped potential.”
For Guardiola to not hesitate on bringing Jover on board at City would suggest that Arteta has made a rather astute addition to his backroom staff.
Furthermore, the Spaniard has told Arsenal players what to expect from Jover in training.
When asked how often his players practiced set-pieces during the 2019/2020 season, Guardiola replied: “Every day.”
With Jover set to start work when the Gunners return to pre-season training on Wednesday, it won’t be too long before players get to grips with his drills.
