Rafael Nadal withdraws from French Open, hints at retiring next year

Xtra Time Web Desk: Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal on Thursday withdrew himself from the French Open because of a hip injury. The 36-year-old tennis star hinted to put an ed to a glittering career in professional tennis.

“It’s not a decision I’m taking, it’s a decision my body is taking,” said Nadal at a press conference

This will be the first time that Nadal will miss the action at Roland Garros since 2005, having won the title a record 14 times.

“It’s probably going to be my last year on the professional tour, I can’t say this 100 percent because you never know what’s going to happen,” Nadal said.

Since his swashbuckling title-winning debut in the French capital in 2005, he racked up 14 titles, winning 112 matches and losing just three. Two of those loses came against arch rival Novak Djokovic.

In 2005, Nadal won the first French Open title when he was just two days past his 19th birthday.

He was the championship’s oldest champion at 36 last year.
