Shakib Al Hasan Created History Against Zimbabwe In 1st ODI

A three-match ODI series is being played between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. In the very first match of this series, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has created history.

Shakib completed his 270 wickets in ODI cricket by dismissing Zimbabwe team captain Brendan Taylor and he has now become the highest wicket-taker for his team in this format. Earlier this record was in the name of former captain Mashrafe Mortaza who took 269 wickets in 218 matches, Shakib took the 270th wicket in his 213th ODI.

Shakib did this feat on the second ball of the 15th over. Brendan Taylor wanted to sweep Shakib’s delivery, but the ball hit the top edge of the bat and went into the air and was caught by fine leg fielder Taskin Ahmed. Taylor scored 24 runs before being dismissed.

Shakib Al Hasan has become Bangladesh’s highest ODI wicket-taker for the second time. He had topped the list for the first time in 2016 to overtake Mortaza, but with the former Bangladesh captain no longer a part of the team’s 50-over setup, Shakib is set to remain at the top for much of the time to come.

Shakib is already Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in Tests and T20, with 215 wickets in the Test format and 92 wickets in T20Is. Shakib Al Hasan is the second-highest wicket-taker in all formats for his team after Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan.

Talking about the match, Bangladesh, batting first in this match, scored 276 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 50 overs on the basis of captain Liton Das (102) century. Apart from Liton Das, Afif Hossain scored 45 runs, while Luke Jongwe took the highest three wickets for Zimbabwe.

After the match, Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal praised Shakib’s bowling by mentioning it.

“I thought Zimbabwe bowled exceptionally well in the first 15 overs, but the way Liton and Mahmudullah batted and then Afif. Today was the perfect example of youngsters stepping up and putting up a good display. I was not thinking about the surface too much,” he said.

“Shakib bowled to the plan and we build the pressure and we got the wickets. Afif’s innings was very special and Mehidy’s innings was crucial too. Small contributions can make a big impact.”
